With Jason Varitek deciding to return for his senior season, two of the three highest unsigned picks from last June's draft were heading to Georgia Tech.
As if that isn't enough, both were catchers. Tucker Barr, a catcher out of Maclay High School in Tallahassee, Florida had signed a letter-of-intent to go to Georgia Tech, figuring on being the Yellow Jackets catcher for three seasons with Varitek heading to the pros.
But when Varitek attended his Accounting II class on September 22nd, that meant Barr would spend a season sitting. That is, unless he signed a pro contract. Barr had until he attended his first class to sign. And keeping tabs all the while on the Varitek situation, he skipped class the first couple of days of school, deciding on his future. In the end, Barr went to class - and Georgia Tech will have his services for the next three seasons. "Jason's a tremendous player," Barr said. "He's really taken me under his wing.
